eBay is a unique auction market that brings products to the market that people want but can't find elsewhere. eBay is generally safe.

The first thing you need to do is to register for a new FREE eBay account. Just click one of the register links at the left of this page. You must register as an eBay user in order to be able to bid on and buy an item.

Visit the New to Ebay help pages for basic information and to find answers to some of your eBay questions.

How eBay works
Typically each auction lasts for seven days. The bidders place their bids through the eBay web site. The amount you bid on an item may be higher than you actually pay if you are successful. This is because eBay will automatically bid for you, upto your specified maximum. If you have the highest bid then there is no reason for eBay to take you up to your maximum bid unless another high bidder enters the auction.

For example, if you are bidding on a DVD and the current highest bid is $5, you have to bid more than this amount, say $10, but your current bid is then set to say $5.50. If someone else bids on this item eBay will automatically re-bid for you up to your maximum bid of $10. You can always increase your maximum bid for an item while the auction is still open. Auction items typically have a flurry of late bids.

Some items have a "Buy It Now" price. If you bid this price then the auction ends immediately and you are the winner. There is no bidding process for Buy It Now items. The first bid to meet the asking price wins.

Browsing
To find a desired item type a few words into the Search box on the eBay home page. Alternatively you can browse by the various categories and drill down to the item category that you are interested in.

Buying
Once you are a registed member you can check recent auctions for the same item to see the item's "going price" on eBay before you bid on the item ("completed listings"). Read the seller's notes on an auction listing page to be sure that you are aware of the shipping charges as well as the allowed methods of payment (see below).

It is the buyer's responsibility to pay the shipping costs although it is the seller's job to have weighed the item and determined how much it costs to ship the item. Sometimes, the seller includes shipping insurance in the shipping price as well. Read the seller's feedback comments.

If the seller has an especially low feedback rating, you may not want to buy from that seller. You can always email questions to the seller while an auction is taking place. Hopefully they will get back to you promptly.

Payment
Not all sellers accept all means of payment. You will see the following kinds of payment: PayPal account, personal check, credit card, money orders.
